Seasonal Allergies…totally BLOW!

Spring is here, and while we love the beautiful flowers and blooming oak trees, for many of us, it also means one thing—seasonal allergies! The pollen count is rising, and with it comes the dreaded nasal congestion, runny noses, itchy-watery eyes, and endless sneezing. If your child suffers from hay fever, you’re not alone. As many as 8.4% of children under 18 are affected by seasonal allergies, according to the CDC.

What Causes Seasonal Allergies?

Seasonal allergies are most often triggered by pollen from wind-pollinated plants like trees, grasses, and weeds. While these allergens are natural, they can cause significant discomfort for your child.

Effective Treatment Options

But don’t worry—relief is possible! Here are some treatment options that can help your child find comfort:

  1. Nasal Corticosteroid Sprays (e.g., Flonase, Nasocort): These are among the most effective options for providing 24-hour relief from nasal and eye allergy symptoms. It’s important to use them consistently, as it may take up to two weeks to see the full effects. Keep in mind that nasal corticosteroids are not recommended for children under 4 years of age.

  2. Oral Antihistamines (e.g., Claritin, Zyrtec): These medications can help reduce symptoms and provide 24-hour relief. Be sure to follow the dosing instructions and give them consistently for the best results.

At-Home Tips for Relief

In addition to medications, there are several steps you can take at home to help reduce your child’s exposure to allergens:

  • Encourage frequent handwashing after your child comes in from playing outside or after school.

  • Change clothes and wash faces after being outside to remove pollen from skin and hair.

  • Keep windows closed during the peak pollen season to minimize pollen exposure inside your home.

When to Reach Out

If seasonal allergies are affecting your child’s quality of life, talk to your House Calls for Kids provider or your pediatrician. With the right treatment plan, you can help your child breathe easier and enjoy the spring season with fewer sneezes!
